Dr. Peter R. Kilmann was born in Washington, D.C., and educated in Pennsylvania, California, and Utah. He has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and masters' degrees in both school psychology (M.A.), and in public health (M.P.H.). He completed a one year internship at Patton State Hospital in California. He is a licensed clinical psychologist, and a licensed marriage and family therapist. He is an AASECT-certified sex therapist. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and the National Register of Psychologists. He has been in clinical practice in the Columbia area for over 30 years.

Dr. Kilmann has been engaged in the practice of clinical psychology in the Columbia/Lexington area for over 35 years. In previous years, he was affiliated with the Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina. In his early years at USC, he was the Director of the Psychological Services Center. His work with married couples included being the director of the federally-funded USC Human Sexuality Project. He taught courses in Psychology of Marriage, Human Sexual Behavior, Personality Theory, and Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Kilmann regularly supervised doctoral students in individual and marital therapy. He has made over 60 presentations at scientific meetings, published over 70 research articles in professional journals, and written two books.

Dr. Kilmann was drawn to the study of psychology because he enjoys helping individuals and couples to achieve positive changes. Involved in athletics, he exercises daily and plays tennis regularly. He is a dedicated fan of college and high school athletics. His four children have participated in multiple sports including football, basketball, baseball, tennis, lacrosse, track, and soccer. His personal involvement with sports activities has enhanced his ability to help many amateur and professional athletes to improve their performance.
